Start by Defining Your Needs

Before comparing fabrics and colours, think about the occasions when you will wear your suit. Will it be intended primarily for days at the office, important meetings, or events? Would you like to wear each piece separately? Do you spend most of your time indoors, or do you regularly travel between locations?

Your answers will help your stylist guide you toward a fabric and construction suited to your everyday life. Someone looking for a suit to wear year-round will not necessarily have the same needs as someone seeking a distinctly seasonal piece.

Choose a Fabric and Weight Suited to the Season

Wool remains an excellent choice for a fall suit. It is natural, breathable, and available in a wide variety of weights and weaves. A smooth finish offers a classic look that transitions easily between seasons, while a more textured fabric, such as flannel, adds depth to navy, grey, or brown. More visible weaves and patterns, such as a mélange texture, a subtle herringbone, or a Prince of Wales check, also add character without compromising versatility.

Fabric weight affects the warmth, drape, and structure of a suit. There is no need to choose the heaviest option: in a climate like Quebec’s, wool weighing approximately 280 to 300 grams can often be worn for much of the year, depending on the weave and your sensitivity to heat. Two fabrics of a similar weight can also feel very different. Handling and comparing them with a stylist remains the best way to assess their softness, flexibility, and drape.

Choose a Colour That Enriches Your Wardrobe

Navy and grey remain dependable foundations. In fall, these classics can be reinterpreted in deeper shades or more textured fabrics. A navy flannel suit, for example, retains all its versatility while offering a distinctly different presence from a lightweight summer fabric. The idea isn’t to add more colours, but to build your wardrobe around two or three shades that work well together. 

The season is also particularly well suited to browns and earth tones, from chocolate to taupe, which pair naturally with cream, blue, burgundy, and leather. If you prefer to keep the foundation understated, seasonal accents can simply come from your shirt, knitwear, or accessories. A touch of burgundy or a cream turtleneck can sometimes transform the entire outfit.

Think of Your Suit as Separate Pieces

A suit’s versatility is not determined solely by whether it can be worn year-round, but also by the number of outfits it can create. A well-chosen jacket can be paired with contrasting trousers or dark jeans, while suit trousers can be worn with a textured shirt or fine knitwear. A three-piece suit offers even more possibilities, since each element can be incorporated separately into other outfits.

Layering creates additional options. A fine turtleneck or knit worn over a shirt creates a warmer, more relaxed look without changing the suit itself. To keep the outfit balanced, however, it is best to limit the number of strong colours and textures. Two or three complementary shades are generally enough to create depth.

Don’t Forget the Shoes and Overcoat

A suit should not be chosen in isolation. Brown shoes with a more rugged finish, a suede style, or Chelsea boots pair especially well with fall fabrics. If you plan to wear boots regularly, the cut and leg opening of the trousers should accommodate them and maintain a natural drape.

The overcoat completes the silhouette. A clean, streamlined cut offers greater versatility, while a double-breasted or longer coat creates a more commanding presence. Ideally, its length and volume should allow it to be worn comfortably over your suit jacket.
