Here are a few tips on how to care for your custom-made dress shirt according to its fabric

Cotton Shirts

Thread count refers to the density of threads in a fabric. High-quality cotton shirts often have a higher thread count, which means the fabric is finer and softer to the touch. However, this can also mean that the fabric requires special care.

Here’s how to care for your cotton shirt based on its thread count:

Low Thread Count Cotton Shirts

Washing
Wash in cold water only. Cold water will increase the lifespan of the fabrics, prevent colours from fading, or transferring onto other garments in the load.

Drying
Dry the shirt using a dryer on medium heat or by hanging it in the open air, which is highly recommended.

Ironing
Use a small spray bottle to lightly mist the shirt, this will make ironing easier. Iron the shirt at a high temperature to remove wrinkles. Do not iron over the seams and do one panel at a time.

To Avoid
Avoid ironing the cuffs and collar. If it’s absolutely necessary, do it on the reverse side. Heat can cause the interfacing to come off and create “bubbles”.

Medium Thread Count Cotton Shirts

Cotton shirts with a medium thread count, typically between 120 and 150, are softer and more durable than cotton shirts with a low thread count.

Washing
Wash the shirt in warm or lukewarm water according to the instructions on the label.

Drying
Dry the shirt using a dryer on low heat or by hanging it to air dry or using a low-temperature tumble dryer.

Ironing
Iron the shirt at a medium temperature to avoid damaging the delicate fibres.

High Thread Count Cotton Shirts

Cotton shirts with a high thread count, typically between 180 and 300, are very soft and comfortable and require special care.

Washing
Wash the shirt in cold water to avoid damaging the delicate fibres.

Drying
Dry the shirt by hanging it in the open air or using a dryer on low heat.

Ironing
Iron the shirt at a medium temperature using a steam iron to avoid damaging the fibres.

Linen Shirts

Linen shirts are ideal for warm climates as they are breathable and lightweight. Linen characteristically wrinkles very quickly. This is not to be feared, but welcomed – it’s part of linen’s charm!

Washing
Wash the shirt in cold or lukewarm water, and avoid using hot water which can damage the linen fibres.

Drying
Dry the shirt by hanging it in the shade, as direct sunlight can cause the fabric to fade.

Ironing
If the shirt is very wrinkled, you can iron it at a slightly lower temperature than for a cotton shirt. This will not damage it and will maintain its breathability.

Bamboo Shirts

Bamboo shirts are becoming increasingly popular due to their softness and durability.

Here are some tips for washing your shirt based on its colour

Washing a dark shirt
To wash a dark shirt, it’s important to wash it inside out to prevent the colour from being damaged by friction in the machine. It’s also recommended to use a detergent for dark colours and to wash at a low temperature to prevent the colour from bleeding.

Washing a light-coloured shirt
Light-coloured shirts require special attention when washing, as they can easily fade or turn yellow. It’s best to wash the shirt with other garments of similar colour.

Preventing yellowing of a white shirt

Wash the Shirt Regularly
Sweat stains and deodorant residues can accumulate on white shirts and cause them to yellow. Therefore, it is important to wash them regularly, ideally after each use.

Avoid Bleaching Products
Bleaching agents such as chlorine bleach can damage the shirt’s fibres and lead to discolouration or further yellowing.

Use Gentle Detergents
Gentle detergents, such as Marseille soap or plant-based washing products, are less harsh on the fibres and help maintain the shirt’s whiteness.

Pre-Soak the Shirt
Before washing the shirt, pre-soak it in cold water with a little white vinegar. This can help remove stains and prevent yellowing.

Avoid Sun Drying
Sun drying can cause white fabrics to yellow, so it is better to dry the shirt in the shade or in a well-ventilated area.

Store the Shirt Properly
Avoid storing white shirts in dark, damp places, as this can promote mold growth and cause yellow stains.

To Extend the Life of the Collar
Before washing the shirt, apply baking soda with a little water to the collar. Use a toothbrush to scrub and lift the grease and dirt.

You are now well equipped to maintain the quality and colour of your shirts

Now it's up to you!
