The colder months call for a few wardrobe adjustments, but that does not mean sacrificing your style the moment you step outside. Whether you are commuting to the office, heading out for dinner or walking around the city, a good pair of boots makes all the difference.

For Gabriel Belcourt, stylist at Surmesur in Quebec City, the key is choosing boots that suit your daily routine. From the style and sole to the leather and finishing touches, every detail matters when finding the right balance of elegance, comfort and functionality.

I have Chelsea boots for winter. I wear them with regular socks, and they feel comfortable. But when there’s a snowstorm, I also have warmer boots.

How should you care for your winter boots?

De-icing salt is leather’s main enemy in winter. To remove salt stains, Gabriel uses a tried-and-true household remedy: a mixture of water and vinegar, applied to the boots with a cloth to help dissolve the white residue. Once the leather is completely dry, he moves on to the step he considers most important: applying a leather dressing such as dubbin at least once a week during the colder months.

Dubbin is a traditional leather dressing made with waxes and oils, designed to condition leather and protect it from moisture. It keeps the material supple, helps limit cracking caused by cold and water, and may slightly darken the leather, so it is best to test it on a small, inconspicuous area first. A few minutes of care each week can make a real difference over the seasons.

Winter boots that reflect your style

A pair of black or brown boots is often an excellent starting point. But once you have the essentials, why not explore other textures, colours or details? Gabriel encourages his clients to look beyond the most conventional choices.

“I’m all for the classics, but I also encourage a little boldness.”

Whether you choose understated Chelsea boots to wear with a suit or military-inspired boots with a stronger presence, what matters is finding a style you will enjoy wearing. Winter boots should do more than get you where you need to go: they should also complete your outfit and reflect your personality.
