A solid suit naturally belongs in a professional wardrobe. Versatile and easy to pair, it is often the starting point. But once the essentials are in place, patterns offer a way to take things a little further.

Checks, stripes, houndstooth or more subtle patterns: it does not take much to transform an outfit. The goal is not necessarily to stand out, but to add depth and personality to your wardrobe while keeping your look appropriate for the office.

A good rule is to work from the inside out: the smallest pattern on the tie, a slightly larger one on the shirt, then the largest on the jacket.

Build on what you already own

Before choosing your next pattern, take a look at what is already in your wardrobe. If you mainly own solid shirts and neutral trousers, a patterned jacket can easily work with several outfits. If your accessories and shirts are already more expressive, a subtler pattern will probably give you more options.

“During consultations, I often tell clients that unless a pattern immediately appeals to them, it is best to avoid bold patterns simply because they think that is what they should choose. Those pieces too often end up sitting in the closet because they feel hesitant about wearing them,” Raymond shares.

This is also where made-to-measure comes into its own. With a stylist, you can choose the fabric, colour, pattern scale and details to complement the pieces you already own, rather than creating an outfit that only works one way.

Make patterns your next step

A good professional wardrobe is not built by adding pieces at random. It evolves gradually.

“A good starting point is to look at which colours already dominate your wardrobe. Is it white? Blue? By identifying the colours you wear most often, you can choose patterns in those same shades, so reaching for a patterned piece feels just as natural as reaching for a solid one,” Raymond advises.

Once you have the solid essentials, patterns add a new dimension to your outfits without starting from scratch. A subtle stripe, a versatile check or a bolder jacket can be enough to refresh several combinations. The right pattern is not necessarily the one that draws the most attention. It is the one that fits naturally into your wardrobe and makes you want to explore new possibilities.
